Being in a state of meditation means being present with what is. Breathing, following the breath, helps focus the mind and bring you back to the present moment. 
The breath is always with you. When you practice meditation and breathing you gain a skill you can use whenever you need to quiet and clear the mind.

Breathwork allows us to restore our connection to our life force – without the breath we cannot live and by consciously re-connecting to it we are increasing our attention and awareness and therefore our capacity to live a more full and healthy life.
