Full of emptiness

Contemplate the fullness of emptiness.⠀

Koans are paradoxical riddles used as a meditation discipline in Zen Buddhism. The point of the koan is to exhaust the analytic and egoic mind in order to reveal the more intuitive no-mind.

Nan-in, a Japanese master, received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.⠀Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor’s cup full, and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is overfull. No more will go in!”⠀“Like this cup,” Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”⠀⠀

An artist lives at the open-end. An artist is always falling into the gap. Improvisation is their life strategy.

In the empty space of the artist’s improvisation all collapses.
No walls. No door. No “go to bed, it’s 3 ‘o clock”.
The empty space knows nothing about 3 ‘o clock.
It is the only space that is not colonized.
It is the seedbed from which anything can grow.
